Coffee in The Box

Coffee in The Box

Adding to the community spirit every Wednesday, 11am — 1pm, is a new ‘Coffee in a Box’ hosted for older residents to enjoy a drink and chat session to help them make new friends and access help and support.

Tables are laid out with games and residents can seek advice on a whole range of issues from health and well-being to new social activities and community groups.

The project is organised jointly by Halton Borough Council and Runcorn Shopping Centre to help older residents get out and about, and mix with others in a similar situation.

Tea and coffee is available at a discount and the council’s dial-a-ride service can be ordered by Halton residents to transport them to and from their homes for a nominal fee of only £2.40.

Karl Clawley, shopping centre manager, said: “The Box has become a wonderful community hub. We are surrounded by older people who live alone and perhaps don’t get the chance to come out and socialise as often as they would like.”

“Our weekly Coffee in a Box session gives them a good reason to venture out and enjoy a chat over a cup of coffee in a warm friendly atmosphere. It’s just the first of several community events we shall be holding in this space.”

“The Box has proved a great incubator for local entrepreneurs. It is brilliant to see nearly a dozen enterprising producers now running stalls selling everything from home-made scouse and glitter glasses to milkshakes and baby clothes.”

Peter Ventre, Halton Council’s principal manager for older people, said: “Isolation can be a big problem for many older residents. The weekly Coffee in a Box is already proving really popular and as word spreads, we hope it will become regular meeting hub for dozens of local residents. The message is — don’t sit at home feeling lonely, come and join us!”
